  1. NO, NO, NO! This is the biggest error a beginner can make. You have NO ability to correct her if she drops it, none, and you severely weaken her understanding. CAGE HER JAW AT ALL TIMES. I will post this on the Blog so others don't make this mistake !

  2. Nothing added, nothing taken away. You must adhere exactly to do what I instruct you to do to succeed. There are 97 ways to FAIL at teaching thr Retrieve and this is one of those ways. We have 14 weeks to train her and caging the jaw remains until we teach the Hold which is 2 months away.

  3. Sophia, this happens in EVERY Retrieve class I teach, and that person gets yelled at. Everyone else will, in time, also get yelled out for failing to follow my instructions. Not the end of the world, and I am grateful you shared so I can fix this now.

  4. Everyone of you will get corrected by me, I guarantee it. Happens in EVERY retrieve class. Remain coachable and I will get you and your dog through this course successfully.

Remember to breathe. And hey, this 'correction' by me is exactly the 'pressure' I was talking about in class. The dog will have a Point of Contention and their handler will want to quit at some point. I sure wanted to quit with Sugar so long ago as Margot was WAY tougher than I am. But I wanted to learn more than I cared about her sarcasm and ridicule so I stuck it out, I learned to breathe THROUGH the hard parts, endure the 'pressure' and got better. Your dog is going to learn it has to work through the 'pressure' to succeed. So too will each of you. And the end result is the two of you will be a team with a relationship that is astounding. But you don't get THAT result until you go THROUGH this process.

    Breathe.
