    Chris,

This is a pass, but oh man, do I have some pointers.

    1) WHERE IS THE LEASH ON SARAH? WHERE IS THE LEASH ON SARAH? YOU HAVE NO CONTROL, NO WAY TO HELP SARAH SHOULD SHE OPT TO JUMP OFF THE CHAIR, YOU HAVE ZERO, NADA, ZILCH, NOTHING IN THE WAY OF BACKUP CONTROL. DO NOT DO THE RETRIEVE WITHOUT A LEASH ON HER!!! YES, I AM YELLING AT YOU. 'Nothing added, nothing taken away' are my instructions and I am adamant a learning MUST have a leash on. If you want to put a retrieve on her successfully, you will have a leash on her AT ALL TIMES. Failing to have a leash on the dog is a recipe to train the dog you have NO control.

    2) Did you read my pointers to Rebekah on her body position? If not, go do so.

    3) Don't repeat a command. Don't repeat a command. Don't repeat a command. Got it?

    4) On your 3rd retrieve you put your right thumb ON the bit (center part of the dowel). This is a fabulous way to get bitten.

    5) Where are your "Give" mechanics? Not once, not one time, did I see the Give mechanic of putting your right thumb in the dog's mouth, above the dowel, and using slight upward pressure with right thumb in dog's upper mouth. If you want to have a tug of war - which results in the dog playing "MINE" and a hard mouth, called a 'Sticky Mouth' in field work, keep failing to do that oh so important Give mechanic. I guarantee you WILL need this so do it, EVERY TIME.

    6) Finally, your timing is off Chris. You say, "Sarah"......and then there is this long pregnant pause before you present the dowel at her lips. The sequence is this,
    * Dowel is hidden until ready to present
    * Handler has dog on Place WITH A LEASH ON AT ALL TIMES
    * Handler opens dog's mouth gently as within 1-2 seconds maximum dowel is presented at dog's lips as handler commands, "Fetch"
    * Dowel is rolled gently into dog's mouth just behind canine teech
    * Conditioned Relaxation begins (you did really well with this)
    * Once the dog's head relaxes, you command "Give" and do the GIVE MECHANIC, dowel is rolled out and disappears again.

    Make sense?

    Roxanne
