HOMEWORK Lesson 11 : Building speed on the RoF against HIGH distractions

Biggest errors made with the retrieve mechanics at this point in the training are body positioning once the DB has been placed on ground and command of "Fetch" is given.

Notice the body position of Loretta? Bend over slightly..

Same bend over slightly body position by Reina..

Again, a bend over body position

Class,

You MUST remain tall and straight by the time you are doing these RoF retrieves. Your body doesn't move, there is NO extra hand movement and you just hold still. The dog will either launch at warp speed...or not.

LOL...check out Ren's eye focus!

Do notice the difference between our dual "Fetch" commands and the speed of each dog working against each other.

Instead, keep your body tall, straight, and quiet when issuing the Fetch command.

Perfect body mechanics.

When the dog doesn't go (called a No-Go) when commanded, snub back their leash so they CAN'T then decide to go get their DB, and get on their ear to escort them to DB the entire way.

And now....group retrieves. By this time, the correct mechanics had been practiced, more than once, by all the students and every student here does EXACTLY what they need to do with their dog in executed perfectly.

Reina demo's perfectly how to send, her dog moves forward then fails to follow through with mouth on DB, so Reina snubs him back (stops his forward momentum), gets on his ear and escorts him ALL THE WAY TO HIS DB. Judah did not make that error in judgement on the next retrieve.

You can't build retrieve speed, focus and intensity any other way except to work against distractions that require the dog to learn your "Fetch = Fetch" command is to be obeyed when you say and pronto.

So work against distractions and get through this stage ASAP so you can go onto the fun stuff.  Gotta build speed, focus and intensity right now because as the retrieve distance increases, if the dog hasn't learned speed, focus and intensity at 6', you sure won't have it at 10' or 20' or 150' etc.

BUILD retrieve speed, focus and intensity now so your dog believes you. Then, when you no longer have the control of a 6' leash, your dog will remember you helped them succeed no matter what and the No-Go's and Pops (dog goes out and then stops) dramatically decrease.

This is the last and most dramatic retrieve training you will do if you do this correctly.

Have fun....

Roxanne
